Ellie Linen Low
ellie@salish.org

Ellie joined Salish Sea Expeditions in the summer of 1999. She holds a Bachelors degree in Biology and Environmental Studies from Williams College in Massachusetts, and a Masters Degree in Marine Affairs from the University of Washington. Her teaching experience includes three years of running a ship-board oceanographic laboratory with the Sea Education Association in Woods Hole, MA, in addition to marine science teaching positions on a number of other vessels world wide. Her diverse oceanographic research career includes serving as a NOAA biological research technician on lengthy Antarctic cruises. Ellie has received a number of awards and Fellowships for her academic work, and has published a number of scientific works in peer reviewed journals. Ellie is a Co-Director of the Washington chapter of the Northwest Aquatic and Marine Educators.

Sophy Johnston

Sophy is a founder of Salish Sea Expeditions. She holds a B.A. in American Studies from Connecticut College and has been working in the environmental and experiential education fields since 1992. Her experience includes directing a summer day camp in rural Maine, developing and teaching hands-on marine science programs at the Poulsbo Marine Science Center and program development and volunteer coordination for a marine environmental education program aboard a traditional schooner on Puget Sound. Sophy holds a 100 ton inland waters Masters license and is a Co-Director of the Washington chapter of the Northwest Aquatic and Marine Educators.

Who We Are

Salish Sea Expeditions is directed and operated by two full time Co-Directors, Sophy Johnston and Ellie Linen Low. Ellie and Sophy share the responsibilities of fundraising, program development, marketing, hiring and training seasonal staff and program logistics. They are supported during program seasons by seasonal staff, including a Captain, a mate, and marine educators.
